ACROSS AMERICA — The ride-share company Uber has opened a window into things people carry around with them and then forget in cars, including a Jeep Liberty engine.

“Please call,” the person separated from the engine implored, according to Uber’s 2024 Lost and Found Index. How does this happen? Someone lugs around 350 or so pounds of iron, puts the engine in an Uber and forgets it?

Perhaps if a previous rider had left behind a meditation crystal, the engine wouldn’t have been forgotten. That was a trend, too.

“Channeling your inner zen and manifesting more just got a little harder,” Uber said. “Riders around the country lost a number of healing crystals, including purple Amethysts, green Aventurines and more.”

Also on Uber’s list of the “50 most unique items” forgotten in an Uber car was a fart sensor.

That’s a thing?

In case you’ve somehow missed that bit of wonderment on the interwebs, fart intensity sensors are not the youthful hi jinks of seventh graders that you might think. In 2009, two Cornell University proudly presented their project for a device that would measure these uh-ohs on a scale of 0-9, “according to sound, temperature and gas concentrations.”

The person who lost the device wants it back.

Also left behind in Uber cars were a fake behind (rather, a “fake butt”), a fake tooth, fake hair (a toupee) and a fake rat skeleton, a prop of some sort.

This wasn’t fake: Someone forgot their pet turtle.

One of these isn’t like the other. Someone forgot waist beads and a burrito steamer.

This is eyebrow-raising: a gray tub of surgical implants. Sketchier still, someone reported losing a “panty liner and 1,000 bucks,” along with the explanation, “That’s all I can remember.”

Was that person traveling with another customer who forgot a “street sign saying ‘She’s drunk’ and a picture frame.” Someone else left undergarments behind, along with bread, a pack of ham and mayo, and another person forgot “some lotion or my thong,” apparently unsure of which item was missing.

These things — “my girlfriend’s pregnant pills,” a paternity test and “a candle that says ‘see you in court’ ” — weren’t left in the same car, but what if they were?

And who wouldn’t want the spear and furry fox tail returned? Or the three overlooked feathers?

Clothing items were most commonly forgotten, followed by luggage, headphones, wallets, jewelry, phones, cameras, tablets or books, laptops and vape pens.

Although not on the list of the most unusual items, people with Mini Coopers evidently can’t keep track of their keys. Other keys were forgotten, too, but the “top lost car keys” started BMW’s little cars, according to Uber.

People also leave food behind, and not just take-out.

“I left expensive blueberries that are special that I need that the store is completely out of,” someone said. “There’s two packages that I absolutely need.”

“I left some pasta in the back by accident,” another rider said. “Feel free to have it! It was so yummy and I didn’t eat out of the plate. Thanks again!”

Other eats left behind included a whole smoked pork belly, a cooler of meat and meat pies.

A couple of people tipped off Uber drivers that their cars could begin to stink because of their forgetfulness. Someone who forgot tomatoes said, “don’t need them back, just a heads-up so they don’t cook in your car.”

“I left the ice cream cones in your car, and was worried about it melting and making a mess,” another person said.

Uber ranked Miami as its most forgetful cities. Others in the top 10, respectively, are Los Angeles; Atlanta; Houston; Dallas; Orlando, Florida; Phoenix; Tampa Bay, Florida; Denver; and Austin, Texas.
