WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Joe Biden approved on Wednesday clemency for 11 people, and one of them is "a family man" from Douglasville.
The White House said in a news release clemency was granted for people who were convicted of non-violent drug offenses, including Jeffrey Alan Lewis.
Lewis, 58, pleaded guilty to a non-violent drug offense when he was 40-years-old, according to the release. Details into Lewis' conviction and sentence were not immediately known Wednesday.
White House officials said Lewis would have received a "significantly shorter sentence" had he been sentenced under modern-day law and sentencing practices.
Lewis completed both his sentence and obligations for his supervised release, officials said. Post-incarceration, officials said Lewis has maintained employment and has contributed "to the community through charitable works and active community engagement."
He has also established himself as a "family man," officials said.
Amid news of his latest clemency actions, Biden said America was built "on the promise of second chances." He issued on March 29 a proclamation deeming April as Second Chance Month.
In addition to the 11 clemencies, Biden commuted sentences for five people.
"Many of these individuals received disproportionately longer sentences than they would have under current law, policy and practice. The pardon recipients have demonstrated their commitment to improving their lives and positively transforming their communities. The commutation recipients have shown that they are deserving of forgiveness and the chance at building a brighter future for themselves beyond prison walls," Biden said in a statement.
"Like my other clemency actions, these pardons and commutations reflect my overarching commitment to addressing racial disparities and improving public safety. While today’s announcement marks important and continued progress, my administration will continue to review clemency petitions and deliver reforms in a manner that advances equal justice, supports rehabilitation and reentry and provides meaningful second chances."
Aside from Georgia, residents granted clemency are in Texas, Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana, Connecticut, South Carolina, Virginia, New York and Washington, D.C.
