GEORGIA — Dozens of public high schools in Georgia are among the best in the country, according to a new ranking Tuesday from U.S. News & World Report.

In the 2024 Best High Schools list, Georgia ranks 18th among U.S. states and the District of Columbia. Among the 432 of ranked schools, 27 are in the top 5 percent nationally, and 111 were in the top 25 percent.

The top 25 public high schools in Georgia and their national rankings are:

  • Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science and Technology, Lawrenceville (Gwinnett County School District), ranked No. 9
  • Columbus High School, Columbus (Muscogee County Public Schools), ranked No. 108
  • Alliance Academy for Innovation, Cumming (Forsyth County Public Schools), ranked No. 150
  • Walton High School, Marietta (Cobb County School District), ranked No. 210
  • Northview High School, Johns Creek (Fulton County School System), ranked No. 237
  • Davidson Magnet School, Augusta (Richmond County Public Schools), ranked No. 271
  • DeKalb School of the Arts, Avondale Estates (DeKalb County School District), ranked No. 311
  • South Forsyth High School, Cumming (Forsyth County Public Schools), ranked No. 321
  • Lambert High School, Suwanee (Forsyth County Public Schools), ranked No. 332
  • Academy for Classical Education, Macon (State Charter Schools Ii- Academy For Classical Education), ranked No. 356

State-by-state performance is based solely on which states have the largest proportion of schools in the top 25 percent. Massachusetts once again leads in the ranking, followed by Connecticut, New Jersey, Maryland and Florida, respectively.

The top high schools have students who score exceptionally high on math, reading and science assessments, as well strong performance among under-served students. High school graduation rates and college readiness among graduates are also measured.

U.S. News also ranked magnet, charter and STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) schools. Among standout schools in Georgia are:

  • Johnson Magnet, Augusta (Richmond County Public Schools), ranked No. 11 in Georgia and No. 366 nationally

  • Walton High School, ranked No. 4 in Georgia and 203 nationally
  • Academy for Classical Education, Macon (State Charter Schools Ii- Academy For Classical Education), ranked No. 10 in Georgia and 349 nationally
  • Atlanta Classical Academy, Atlanta (Atlanta Public Schools), ranked No. 29 in Georgia and No. 962 nationally
  • Lake Oconee Charter High School, Greensboro (Greene County Public Schools), ranked No. 42 in Georgia and 1,548 nationally
