Nearly 25,000 cases of apple juice have been recalled because high arsenic levels were found during testing.

S. Martinelli & Company is recalling its Gold Medal Apple Juice because of elevated levels of inorganic arsenic, according to a recall notice.

The recalled products, which were sold in one-liter glass bottles, tested above the guidance action level for inorganic arsenic in apple juice set by the FDA, the company said. The recalled products have best-by dates of March 9 and 10, 2026.

A full list of the recalled batch numbers can be found here.

Where were the products sold?

The recalled products were distributed in Alaska, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin, according to Food Safety News.

What should I do if I purchased this product?

If you have purchased this juice, do not consume it. Recalled products should be thrown out or returned where they were purchased.

As of now, no illnesses related to the recalled products have been reported. No other production dates or Martinelli products are affected by this recall, the company said in its recall notice.

What are the risks of arsenic?

According to the FDA, exposure to high levels of arsenic during times of active brain development can cause adverse neurological effects such as learning disabilities, behavior difficulties and lowered IQ.

"Fetuses, infants, and children are particularly vulnerable to the potential harmful effects from arsenic exposure because of their smaller body sizes and rapid metabolism and growth," the FDA says.

Long-term exposure to inorganic arsenic in adults has been associated with skin disorders and increased risks for skin, bladder and lung cancers. It also increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, experts say.

"For people of all ages, short-term exposure to very high amounts of inorganic arsenic can result in nausea, vomiting, bruising, and numbness or burning sensations in the hands and feet," the FDA says.
