ATLANTA, GA — One of three Atlanta police officers injured in a Desoto Avenue shooting that killed a suspect has been released from the hospital, Atlanta Police said Sunday.

The other two officers remained at Grady Memorial Hospital, where they were recovering, police said.

"Once again, you see that guns are causing harm in our communities, and unfortunately three APD officers were hit," Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said at a news conference Saturday.

Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum said the officers were injured while responding to a man with weapon call around 5:15 p.m. Saturday. The initial call was to Fairbanks Street; however, police encountered the suspect at Desoto Avenue.

The suspect had a knife and a handgun, Schierbaum told media.

"During that encounter, there was a struggle," he said. "There was gunfire that resulted in three of our officers being injured."

Of the officers who were injured, two of them were 31-years-old and have been with the APD for four years each, Schierbaum said. The third officer was 28-years-old and has been with the APD for five months.

One officer was shot in the shoulder, one suffered a grazed wound and another officer was shot in the leg, Schierbaum said. Two of the officers required surgery, he said.

He did not identify the officers by the name, nor the suspect who died in the shooting.

The Georgia State Patrol and the Fulton County Sheriff's Office assisted with getting the officers to Grady, he said.

"Thank God for protecting our officers tonight," Schierbaum said Saturday.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is overseeing the probe in the shooting.

"In moments of adversity, the strength of a community shines brightest. Today, we extend our sincere appreciation to our community partners, local businesses and fellow law enforcement agencies for their unwavering support," police said Sunday.
